What does it mean to be whole?

Little Bird with One Wing is a story about a kingdom of birds who reside in a place known as the “Tree.” This avian community’s day to day routines are suddenly interrupted by an event that sets in motion decisions affecting a new but vulnerable life. These flying, feathered creatures and the way they live symbolize our human experience and how we address situations that may seem reasonable or even settled. However, because of self-serving motives, something very precious gets lost, especially when it affects the powerless in the decision-making process. What begins to surface in this original tale of winged dwellers trying to survive is the notion that they, like many of us, have forgotten the spirit of what it means to be whole.

Welcome to the reality of Little Bird with One Wing.

About the author

James W. Bill O’Clock

Over 50 years ago Bill began writing poems that dealt with a variety of visionary ideas that take place in otherworldly settings but relate to our human condition. The dream of sharing these stories in rhyme is now becoming a reality through the contributions of other family members 50 years later.

Iowa native James W. “Bill” O’Clock was raised in South Dakota. Though his professional career spanned over 40 years in disciplines such as engineering, management and bioethics, Mr. O’Clock continued to enjoy many other activities including writing poetry. The author’s interest in poetry first started when he was in college, and continued to grow as writers such as C.S. Lewis inspired him to use his poems to convey symbolic values and ideas. Now retired, Bill O’Clock has revised some of the poems he penned many years ago. The partnership between his artistic son Peter and editor wife Pirkko have produced two imaginative and powerful illustrated poems. SOCOBY (State Or Condition Of Being Young) was the author’s first poetic book, published in 2022 (https://socoby.com). The most recent collaboration, Little Bird with One Wing, was published in 2024. In the pages of Little Bird with One Wing the author wants the reader to enjoy the beautiful and stunning illustrations as well as to be challenged by the thought-provoking poetic narrative. More importantly, the author wants the reader to connect the story of a little bird and certain issues affecting humanity today that are tragic, but considered established by many. When seen through a different perspective, the end result will hopefully be an expanded life-affirming view.

Little Bird with One Wing

“The words make a poetic narrative that is deep; with the pictures, it becomes bottomless.”
